MADISON, Ind. (WDRB) -- Four people were found dead after a house fire Tuesday evening outside Madison, according to Indiana State Police.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, a spokesman for ISP, said firefighters were called to the 1600 block of East Telegraph Road shortly after 4 p.m. That's about 2 miles east of Madison.

Wheeles said firefighters went into the home to extinguish the fire and found four victims. They were all pronounced dead.

It's not clear how they died or what caused the fire. Wheeles said it's too early in the investigation to determine if the house fire or deaths are suspicious.

"Because, at the end of the day, we do have a family that lost loved ones and we owe it to them to do a thorough investigation and provide them with some answers as to exactly what happened that took the lives of their loved ones," Wheeles said.

The names and ages of the victims haven’t been released.

Wheeles said the coroner will perform autopsies, and the state fire marshal will conduct the fire investigation.

No other information was immediately available.

ISP is leading the investigation.
