LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- At least four people jumped from a second story window to escape a burning apartment building in Shepherdsville Thursday night.
Officials said the fire started shortly after 8 p.m. at Shepherdsville Village on Landmark Court.
Shepherdsville Fire Chief Jody Craig said everyone got out, but six people were taken to the hospital -- including people who jumped from windows.
Michael Gore, who was at his friend's apartment, said he and three other men had to jump out of a 2-story window to escape the flames.
"It's crazy though," Gore said, adding that while he was not injured, two of his friends were taken to the hospital.
"One guy, he's on the way to the ER with a broken ankle, the other probably broke his arm, Gore said, adding that he "heard an explosion right after we were out the window. Before that he said he and his friends were listening to music when they heard a commotion in the hallway. When he opened the door, the staircase was in flames.
The apartment building's eight units all had damage and the building is a total loss, Craig said. The American Red Cross and the City of Shepherdsville are helping the displaced residents.
Craig said officials are working to determine the cause of the fire.
Firefighters from Shepherdsville, Mt. Washington, Zoneton and Nichols responded to the blaze.
