LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- People are opening their hearts and their wallets to help victims of Hurricane Florence, but the Better Business Bureau wants you to be careful before you give so you don't become the victim of a scam.
The BBB is suggesting the following tips before donating any money to charities or organizations helping hurricane victims:
- Don't fall for copycats. Double check the names of charities. A fraudster may use a copycat name that is similar to a reputable organization.
- Be wary of emails and social media. Scammers sometimes link you to fake websites, especially over email. Just go straight to the charity's website instead.
- Don't give out your personal information. Charities might ask for some information, like your name or mailing address, but don't give out your Social Security number or driver's license number.
- Don't feel pressured to give immediately. A charity is happy to accept your donation today, tomorrow or next week.
