LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The body of a southern Indiana man was found in a river in Lawrence County after a kayaking incident Thursday afternoon.

In a written statement Friday, conservation officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said 52-year-old Brian Howell from Mitchell, Indiana, went missing near the Lawrenceport boat ramp around 2:30 p.m.

Officials said he was trying to retrieve gear that washed out of his kayak in turbulent water in the East Fork of the White River. Conservation officers found his body near the same area around 9 p.m. Thursday.

An exact cause of death is pending medical examination, and the incident is still under investigation.
