LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- David A. Jones, perhaps Louisville’s greatest civic booster, finally received a "Hometown Heroes" banner four years following his death at 88.

Jones grew up in west Louisville and co-founded Humana Inc., the largest corporation headquartered in Kentucky. A tireless advocate of his hometown, Jones drove or helped along countless advances, including recruiting UPS’ global air hub and building the Kentucky Center for the Arts and the Parklands of Floyds Fork.

The banner, featuring a photo of Jones in front of the granite Humana Building taken in the late 1980s or early 1990s, was hung on the façade of the downtown Louisville YMCA, where Jones once played pickup basketball.

"We are all living in David's Louisville, because he has helped shape the city that we all call home," Mayor Craig Greenberg said during a dedication ceremony.

David Jones Jr., Jones' eldest son, said his father deserves the recognition, but surely would have resisted it.

"I'm pleased with this mural, even though I know my father would have opposed it heartily — and successfully — if he were still with us," Jones said.
