LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- If you eat a lot of eggs, those $4 and $5 cartons right now can make or break your grocery bill.
As crazy as it may sound, some people are raising chickens to help with that, but is it a smart idea?
It's one of the hottest trends of 2025. A couple of chickens that lay one egg a day equals out to near 600 eggs a year.
The chickens themselves may not be expensive, but think about everything needed to raise them.
You'll pay around $500 for a chicken coop, $25 or so a month for chicken food and wood chips, and what if one of them gets sick? Vet bills aren't cheap.
All of that comes to about $800 your first year, when a dozen eggs per week at the grocery store is less than $300 even with today's high prices.
The bottom line is raise chickens because you want the experience and the freshest eggs - not to save a few bucks.
