LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Have you received a phone call from a scammer claiming to be with your local sheriff's department? You may not be alone.

People from across the country are getting threatening phone calls claiming there is a warrant for their arrest, some even know your name and address.

The callers are demanding money, and threatening arrests if you can't pay.

Sarah Cadwallader received a call like this. After listening to the voicemail, she was immediately frightened.

"Mrs. Cadwallader you have some urgent matters that need to be addressed as soon as possible. You're not in any immediate trouble. Could you please contact me at your earliest convenience?"

She is a social worker, and explained she had just missed a court date in October involving a juvenile. So, the voicemail lined up.

Immediately she reached out to a friend who works in law enforcement, and they were able to tell her that it was a scam.

If you receive a call like this, be sure to ask questions. Find out what county they are in and if it is okay to check their badge number, that way you don't waste your money.
