LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Office of Homeland Security is warning about a powerful synthetic drug authorities say is appearing in central Kentucky.

According to investigators, the substance, identified as cychlorphine, is believed to be about 10 times more potent than fentanyl. Officials say the drug has already been linked to overdose deaths in neighboring states.

Authorities warn the substance may be mixed into other illegal drugs, increasing the risk of accidental overdose for users who may be unaware of its presence.

State leaders are urging first responders to use extreme caution when handling unknown substances, noting that even incidental exposure could be dangerous. Officials recommend treating suspected cases as medical emergencies.

The Kentucky Office of Homeland Security is also advising the public to remain vigilant and avoid contact with unfamiliar substances, citing the potentially deadly risks.
