LOUSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville filmmaker released a documentary short at a festival known as "Black Sundance."
Imani Dennison directed "The People Could Fly," which is a short film about Black gathering spaces in Louisville. It pays homage to Black Southern folktales and focuses on the roller skating culture between the 1960s and the 2000s. The film includes archival footage, photos and new material to showcase the resilience and creativity of Louisville's Black community.
The film premiered at the BlackStar Film Festival in Philadelphia this month. It marks the first documentary coming out of the Chicken & Egg Pictures | POV Shorts Co-Production Fund content development collaboration that was announced last year. Dennison was one of five grantees across three projects to receive the inaugural grant, according to a news release.
Dennison's previous work premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Dennison, a graduate of Howard University, is an award-winning filmmaker and wanted to paint a portrait of the spaces in his hometown, according to a news release.
