LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Small Business Saturday drew families from all over Kentuckiana to local shops around the area.
"I had a line out the door before I got here today," LouABull employee Kyle D'Aprile said.
Shoppers like Tina Truitt said they love giving back to the community they live in.
"It's so much easier and so much nicer to be able to shop local than going to the big chains," Truitt said.
On Saturday, people got a good start to holiday shopping and also spent the day eating and drinking local as well.
This fall a large construction project in NuLu was completed after more than a year of work. That project was a common complaint from employees and business owners at the time who said it hurt business.
"We were out of work for three days because we couldn't get into the front door," D'Aprile said.
Now that the project is complete, D'Aprile said they are back to seeing more foot traffic.
"Ever since they finally finished right in front of us, it's been picking up a lot more down the street," he said.
Katie Meinhart is the president of the NuLu Business Association and owns Six Sisters Boutique and Paxton's.
She said shopping local this time of year is huge for stores, and community members benefit from keeping it local.
"We give back to your schools, your churches, your non-profits as well, a lot more than the big boxes and the online retailers do so it's always important to keep that money here and we're going to give it right back to you in a different form," Meinhart said.
This isn't the last shopping event NuLu is hosting this season. Dec. 12 from 5-8 p.m. you can head back out for the last NuLu Night of the year.
