LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Juneteenth Festival will be held at Lynn Family Stadium in the Butchertown neighborhood on June 15.

The annual festival celebrates freedom, culture and community.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to order freedom for the enslaved people of the state — two months after the Confederacy had surrendered in the Civil War. The federal holiday is annually observed on June 19.

This year, Juneteenth Festival organized have partnered with Louisville's professional soccer clubs. On June 15, Racing Louisville FC hosts NJ/NY Gotham FC at noon, which will be broadcasted on ESPN.

Louisville Juneteenth Festival will follow the game at 2 p.m. in the soccer stadium's Purple Lot. The festival will go until 11 p.m. and commemorate the heritage and legacy of African Americans with vendors, food, soulful live music and activities for all ages.

"This year marks a special milestone for the event as we celebrate our fifth year and empower local businesses, artists, and provide resources for all who attend," Juan Lambert, board chair of the Louisville Juneteenth Festival as well as marketing and communications director at Park DuValle Community Health, said in a news release. "“This is more than just a festival. It’s a celebration of unity, progress and the enduring spirit of our freedom. We encourage the community to spread the word about this year’s event and join us for a day when heritage, reflection and community intersect."

The festival expects to have more than 100 minority businesses. Tickets can be purchase online or bought at the gate.
