New ice cream shop to open Friday near UofL campus

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new ice cream shop is opening near the University of Louisville campus.

B.A.D. Boys Ice Cream will open Friday, April 25, at 500 Colorado Avenue, according to our partners at Louisville Business First.

The shop will be open Friday nights from 5-9 p.m., and from 12-9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Owner Steve Wonder, an Ohio native, told LBF he's always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and opening the ice cream shop is "the fulfillment of a decades-long ambition."

"I've always wanted to have my own business. But my family were blue-collar workers; we didn't have money to go buy anything or do anything," Wonder told LBF. "I became an accountant. I'm 62 going on 63, and hopefully I'll be retiring soon. I finally have the money and the time to do what I want."

Wonder said the ice cream shop will serve products from Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream, a premium brand based in Madison, Wisconsin. It will also offer ice cream cakes, vegan and sugar free options.

The 2,200-square-foot space on Colorado Avenue was vacant until Wonder purchased it for $165,000. But because it wasn't zoned properly for a retail business, it took him two years to work through the rezoning process. The building was renovated to add bathrooms and update the plumbing and electric. In all, Wonder told said he invested more than $250,000 to start the business.

Several signs above the space carry the store's motto of "you want nutrition, eat carrots."
