LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A nonprofit cat café in Louisville's Belknap neighborhood is closing its doors at the end of the month.
Lucky Cat Café & Lounge made the announcement in a Facebook post Friday afternoon, citing, in part, rising costs making it difficult for the small nonprofit to survive.
"We lost too many key people this year. A good nonprofit must have enough committed leaders with vision and passion, and this loss is what impacted our organization the most," the café said in the post.
Since opening in September 2018 on Dundee Road, off Bardstown Road, Lucky Cat has seen 766 cats pass through its doors and leave for their forever home after being adopted.
"For nearly seven years, we have had the pleasure of meeting thousands of cat lovers and friends," the café said in its announcement Friday. "Thank you for the support you've shown us through these years."
The nonprofit partnered with organizations such as the Shamrock Pet Foundation and Louisville Metro Animal Services, providing a temporary home for cats until they found their permanent home. Guests could visit with the cats for a small donation to lounge with them or look for a new family member.
Lucky Cat said its last day will be Sunday, April 27, from noon to 5 p.m. Until then, the café will be open Thursday-Saturday from 12-6 p.m., and Sunday from 12-5 p.m.
The café said it still has "a handful of sweet, friendly cats that need homes" before they close their doors for good, and encourage visits this weekend and in the days leading up to its closure.
Lucky Cat Café & Lounge is located at 2230 Dundee Road in Louisville.
