LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The University of Kentucky is moving forward with $25 million in upgrades to Kroger Field.
The upgrades are designed to increase athletics revenue and enhance the fan experience, according to reporting from our partners at Louisville Business First.
UK officials outlined the proposed improvements in a January meeting of the Champions Blue LLC board of governors, a group that helps guide long-term planning for Kentucky Athletics. The upgrades are part of an effort to remain competitive in a rapidly changing college athletics environment, the university said in a news release.
The renovations will expand premium seating areas, improve amenities for fans and create new revenue opportunities that could be used year-round.
University officials estimate the upgrades could generate nearly $4 million in new annual revenue.
Some of the proposed improvements include additional chairback seating in the north and south upper decks, expanded club and loge seating, and new terrace-style seating areas designed to create more social viewing spaces. Plans also include premium standing-room patio clubs near the scoreboard and a new West End Zone Field Club with year-round use potential.
"These improvements are essential to remain competitive in an era defined by rapid change," UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart said in the release. "We must continue to build sustainable resources that support our student athletes, coaches and fans for years to come."
Installation of chairback seating in the north upper deck is expected to begin during the upcoming offseason, with other projects planned for future off seasons.
UK Athletics officials said the next phase will include detailed design and construction planning, with some upgrades incorporated into already scheduled offseason work to maintain what the university calls a "first-class fan experience."
