UofL Health – South Hospital expanding with $8.5M medical plaza in Bullitt County | Business

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new hospital in Bullitt County is expanding just six months after its grand opening.

UofL Health – South Hospital officially opened earlier this year in Shepherdsville.

UofL Health opened the fast-track emergency room at the facility off Interstate 65 in October 2023. But the rest of the hospital opened to the community earlier this year. The $78 million hospital includes a 10-bed intensive care unit, enhanced heart care services, expanded emergency capabilities, expanded cardiopulmonary services, a state-of-the-art pharmacy and more.

The hospital campus plans to expand with a medical plaza. According to a news release Monday, the three-story building is an $8.5 million investment across the street from the hospital. The 60,000-square-foot expansion will allow for additional space for primary care, orthopedics, urology and, eventually, a women's center. The new facility will be known as Medical Plaza 2.

"The expansion of space and development here at South Hospital speaks to the need of accessible health care that this community was lacking," Dorie Shelburne, CEO of UofL Health – South Hospital, said in a news release. "Since opening the full-service hospital in March, we’ve stayed busy providing constant patient-centered care at near-full capacity daily. This continued growth is proof that we will continue to invest in Bullitt County."

Medical Plaza 2 will open in two phases. The first phase is expected to be completed by early 2025 and will offer primary care, orthopedic and urology services. According to a news release, the second phase will add a multidisciplinary clinic with nephrology, pain and ENT services, a women’s health center and the UofL Health – Brain and Spine Institute.

"Providing preventative care at Medical Plaza 2 is the perfect pairing to support South Hospital," Wade Mitzel, COO of UofL Health, said in a news release Monday. "We’re bringing more providers to Bullitt County which means we can serve our patients in this community even more effectively."
