SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- UofL Health South Hospital has been open to patients for just three months but it's already making a big difference. So much so, in fact, that a medical building across the street in Shepherdsville was recently purchased to bring in more doctors to serve Bullitt County.
UofL Health opened the fast-track emergency room at the facility off Interstate 65 in October 2023. But the rest of the hospital opened to the community earlier this year. The $78 million hospital includes a 10-bed intensive care unit, enhanced heart care services, expanded emergency capabilities, expanded cardiopulmonary services, a state-of-the-art pharmacy and more.
There are 40 beds for in-patient care, but over the years, that could balloon to nearly 100 beds.
"It is a blessing for us to have the community trust us with their care and it is a blessing for us to be able to provide that care," said Dorie Shelburne, CEO of UofL South Hospital.
Medical leaders are thrilled about the location, which is right off the Brooks exit in an area that continues to see new development. But it's seen a massive influx of patients in just its first few months in service.
The 40 beds are consistently full with more people waiting to be seen. And there's room to expand, with 20 more beds able to be added for additional in-patient rooms.
UofL Health had a goal of hiring about 100 people to staff the hospital. Since last July, nearly 230 employees have been hired. The people working those in-patient and operating rooms as well as the cardiac catheterization lab allow patients to stay close to home without having to be transferred to Louisville.
And it has ultimately saved lives.
"At least one or two, that I know of, may not have had a positive outcome had they driven further than right up the street from their home," Shelburne said.
The hospital is looking to hire more registered nurses. To sign up for a virtual job fair, click here.
