LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- From Westport Road you can see the development happening at Indian Springs, but what you don't see is the closed golf course and how neighbors are using it for their own benefit.
The 18-hole course was once used by golf carts. It's now used as walking paths and has been converted into a large green space for Indian Springs residents.
It all came about after the previous owner wanted to close the course, which was struggling financially.
That's when residents were given a rare opportunity.
“We worked out a deal with the previous owner to take control of the golf course in February of this year, and in turn he kept a few acres out front along Westport Road to develop,” said Todd Hall, with the Indian Springs Board of Directors.
You can see development happening at the front of the subdivision.
An Aldi is already in the works and will soon be followed by a McDonalds.
A boutique hotel will be built on what was once the first hole of the golf course, which is located in front of nearby apartments.
As for the rest of the land, Indian Springs residents continue to use it daily.
“Folks are able to walk the 5.25 mile walking trail. We have have 5 or 6 fishing lakes where people are actually able to go out and enjoy now, and just kind of roam the area,” said Todd Hall.
The former clubhouse has also now been put up for lease.
“We need someone who is stable, someone that will really become a part of this community,” said Gant Hill with Gant Hill and Associates.
Realtor Gant Hill says with a nationwide trend of more golf courses closing than opening, this is an agreement even he hasn't seen before.
“I've heard of golf courses being sold to other operators, but I've never heard of one do what's occurred here, which is essentially give the land and the clubhouse to the neighbors,” said Gant Hill.
“We're excited to gain control of this land and control our destiny going forward,” said Todd Hall.
