LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of its former spokesperson.
Lt. Col. Carl Yates died early Friday morning at the age of 86, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
Yates served alongside the late sheriff John Aubrey for many years, serving as a spokesperson for the sheriff's office. Aubrey passed away in September 2025 at the age of 86.
"For generations of deputies, law enforcement officers, reporters and members of this community, Carl Yates was far more than a public information officer," the sheriff's office said. "He was a trusted voice of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, a steady presence during moments of crisis, and a friend and mentor to countless people inside and outside of law enforcement."
His cause of death has not been announced, and funeral arrangements are pending.
"The Sheriff's Office extends its deepest condolences to Carl's family, friends, colleagues and to the many people whose lives he touched throughout his career," the sheriff's office said. "We ask the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
