LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- People rolled up their sleeves Saturday to donate blood.

Mutual Aid Day was a multi-layered event with a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. It was held at the St. Matthews Eline Branch Library.

Several community organizations were set up to promote safety and sustainability. The theme of the event was focused on giving.

"When you know that you can have such an effect on people's lives with just a simple donation," said Derrick Honeycutt with American Red Cross. "Because even with just a whole blood donation you are saving three lives."

People could also bring unwanted items for others to use if needed.

State Rep. Sarah Stalker, who serves the 34th House District, wanted the free event to give community members a way to connect and support each other.

"This time of year, we start to see that blood supplies become critically low," Stalker said in a news release. "If you want to help people tangibly, this is perfect, because you could literally save someone's life. This blood drive will help people do just that."
