NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- A man was found dead inside an SUV that had crashed into a deep creek Thursday morning in New Albany.
Police were called to to the area of 10th and Main Streets just after 10 a.m. after a man reported a vehicle crashed through his yard and hit his front steps, according to New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey. The scene is near the city's wastewater plant.
Bailey said the vehicle continued down an embankment and into Falling Run Creek. Donald Green, who reported the crash to police, said the creek is about 30-feet deep, but is several feet higher right now because of flooding.
Bailey said fire crews from New Albany and Clarksville, as well as conservation officers from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, were called to the scene and conducted an "extensive recovery operation."
A silver 2007 SUV was recovered from the creek, and the man inside was dead, Bailey said. He added that the crash is considered an active investigation, but is pointing toward a possible medical issue though no "definitive statements can be given pertaining to the cause of the crash or death until the conclusion of the investigation."
Green told WDRB his grandson heard a loud boom outside their house around 10 a.m. and noticed that their steps were gone. Green got to the house and saw someone had driven through, but didn't see the car and called police to see if a car had been pulled out of the water. He then saw that the tire tracks led to the creek, and said DNR confirmed the car was in the water.
The name of the victim is being withheld until all of his family has been notified.
