LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A 14-year-old was arrested in connection to the murder of a recent Indiana University graduate in Indianapolis.
Indianapolis Police said Wednesday they arrested the 14-year-old for allegedly shooting 23-year-old Brett Scrogham on May 28 at a downtown parking garage, as reported by FOX59.Â
Officers responded to the 100 block of S. Capitol Avenue to a report of a shooting and found Scrogham shot in his car. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
Scrogham, who recently graduated as a top 100 student from the IU Kelley School of Business, was visiting Indianapolis when he was shot.
Police said they arrested the teen after reviewing surveillance video and talking to witnesses. They believe the shooting was a random act of violence.
"I'm frustrated and disheartened to tell you the person we think is responsible is a 14-year-old child," said Indianapolis Metro Police Department Chief Tanya Terry. "Let that sink in, 14 years old and arrested for murder," said Indianapolis Metro Police Department Chief Tanya Terry.Â
The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will decide whether formal charges will be filed, which could happen as early as Friday. Because the suspect is only 14, the case will start in the juvenile system.
