LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A death investigation is underway after Louisville Police's River Unit recovered a body Monday from a car that went into the Ohio River on Saturday.

Louisville Metro Police responded around 7:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports from a tugboat that a car had driven off the waterfront near Joe’s Crab Shack, according to spokesperson Aaron Ellis.

Ellis said at the time it was unknown whether the act was accidental or intentional.

LMPD ground units searched the waterfront and surrounding areas while Louisville Fire launched a boat to assist in the search.

Crews located the car around 9 p.m. Saturday, but no victim was found inside, Ellis said. Because of the river’s fast currents, the search was suspended and later resumed on Monday.

According to Ellis, around 5:50 p.m. Monday, LMPD’s River Unit located the vehicle again and recovered the body of what appears to be an adult inside.

Police said it's unknown at this time if the adult was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident.

LMPD’s Homicide Unit is now conducting a death investigation.
