LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A teenage boy was killed and another person was taken to the hospital after a double shooting at California Park Saturday night, according to Louisville Metro Police.

LMPD responded to a shooting in the 1600 block of Gallagher Street at 9:15 p.m. When police arrived, they found a 15- or 16-year-old boy who had been shot. He died at the scene.

A short time later, another male, whose age isn't known, was found at 9th and Cawthon streets. He was taken to UofL Hospital with what appears to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Maurice Blakey lives in the California neighborhood.

"No one deserved to lose their life that way, especially not a kid, who hasn't even experienced life," Blakey said. "There's so much life out here to live and these kids aren't getting an opportunity to experience it at all. They don't know what hard times are yet. They haven't paid a bill and I just think it sucks. It's like they're dying younger and younger nowadays."

On Sunday, children were playing soccer on the other side of the park where crime scene tape still remains.

"We've got a lot of responsibility on our end that we need to actually step up and take care of this problem," said Langston Gaither, a member of St. Stephen Church. "It's not on them. It's on us because we know better. We know how to teach, we know how to lead, we know how to direct."

Gaither believes leaders in the community need to immerse themselves in the neighborhoods to redirect children.

"There are people like myself who would be more than happy to extend a hand and say come on, I'll guide you, I'll lead you," Gaither said. "We'll be more than happy to take your hand."

Police don't have any suspects.
