LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A former Marine Corps recruiter accused of targeting high school girls for sex had his plea agreement withdrawn in court Wednesday morning, setting the stage for a jury trial next year.
A change of plea hearing and sentencing was scheduled for Steven Robinson at 9:30 a.m. in Clark County Circuit Court. But the Clark County Prosecutor's Office withdrew the plea agreement, which would have had Robinson pleading guilty in his two cases in exchange for six years of probation.
The judge then set new dates for the case, with a tentative trial date of Jan. 20, 2026.
Robinson, a former Marine Corps recruiter with the Clarksville office, is facing multiple counts of child seduction and possession of child pornography in two different cases.
In the first case, he's charged with one count of child seduction, two counts of possession of child pornography and false informing. In another case, he's charged with two counts of child seduction and four counts of possession of child pornography.
According to a probable cause affidavit for the first case, Robinson is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old in August 2022, when he was 24.
The court document says Robinson was caught at a Days Inn engaging in sex acts with the teen.
When asked if he was a Marine recruiter, Robinson reportedly told police that he was not. When asked if he was affiliated with any branch of the U.S. military, he also said no. But officers with the Jeffersonville Police Department were able to determine he was in fact a Marine recruiter, based out of the Clarksville office.
Robinson was later arrested for child seduction and false informing. Arresting officers took his cell phones and put them on airplane mode to be secured at the police headquarters until they obtained a search warrant.
Police learned in an interview with the teen that the two had been exchanging nude photos. After obtaining a search warrant for Robinson's phone, investigators found "an extensive amount of inappropriate photos" of the 17-year-old and at least two other victims, also believed to be juveniles.
Investigators believe Robinson was using an application on his Android phone that allowed him to "screen capture images from Snapchat without the other party knowing," which he was saving on an additional application. They also found photos Robinson is believed to have taken of the teen at the recruiting office without her knowledge.
Despite being given a work phone, Robinson reportedly conducted most business with potential recruits on his personal phone.
Investigators were able to determine there were at least six other girls who appeared to be of high school age that he "engaged in this samer pattern of behavior with."
According to a PCA for the second case, investigators learned of a second potential victim, also a 17-year-old girl, while investigating the first case after finding nude photos of her on Robinson's phone.
Through their investigation, police learned Robinson and the teen had engaged in sexual intercourse at the Marine Corps recruiting office on two different occasions, after she met him through Snapchat. Robinson reportedly picked her up on more than one occasion under the guise of doing training and other preparations for her to join the Marine Corps. There were also numerous nude photos of the teen on Robinson's phone. She was 16 years old at the time.
According to court documents, the incidents occurred over several weeks in August 2022, while Robinson was married.
