LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was arrested Monday on forgery and perjury charges.

According to a news release from the JCSO, Christopher Robinson was assigned to the Auto Inspection Unit and an investigation began after concerns were raised about the integrity of Kentucky motor vehicle inspection forms.

Court documents state Robinson received benefits by forging TC 96-182 forms by certifying that inspections had been falsely completed.

Physical and video surveillance over a two-week investigation showed Robinson "often submitted an overwhelming amount of TC 96-182 forms for vehicles that had not actually entered the inspection lot," court documents claim.

On Monday, detectives saw an unknown person place paperwork in a folder on Robinson's desk while he wasn't present.

Detectives then saw Robinson complete multiple forms, place them in the same folder and place it in a desk drawer under another envelope that was used to collect money at the end of the day.

While Robinson was at lunch, detectives recovered the folder and found five forms for titles of vehicles that hadn’t been at the inspection location, along with copies of five different driver’s licenses.

Court documents state after being Mirandized and confronted about the folder, Robinson admitted to forging the forms on multiple occasions for individuals over an unknown amount of time.

Robinson told police the folder was given to him by a man, who is known to forge documents related to salvage vehicles and has been charged with forgery in the past, court documents say.

WDRB is not naming the man because he hasn't been charged at this time in this incident.

Court documents claim that Robinson said he knew of the man's criminal history and still agreed to create the false forms for him.

“Since taking office, we’ve focused on improving efficiency and accountability," Jefferson County Clerk David Yates said in a statement. "During that process, working in partnership with Sheriff David James, together we uncovered a deputy sheriff involved in falsifying motor vehicle inspections. I’m proud of our staff’s diligence and grateful for the Sheriff’s swift action. Together with the Mayor and our law enforcement partners, we remain committed to integrity and the betterment of our community."

Robinson has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case.

He is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment on Tuesday.
