LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man was arrested on Christmas in Adair County after police said he stole a state truck and crashed it.

In a Facebook post, the Columbia Police Department said officers were called to the Adair Regional Jail around 9:30 p.m. Monday on a report that a "suspicious male" was in a vehicle parked in front of the facility.

Police said Joseph Shafer, 48, of Columbia, was inside the vehicle and under the influence. The truck he was in was a state highway department truck, according to the police department, with damage to the front end.

When the highway department was notified, they found a man, believed to be Shafer, had stolen the truck from their office. He allegedly drove through a locked gate, causing damage to property and the vehicle.

Shafer was arrested and booked into the Adair Regional Jail on charges of public intoxication, criminal trespassing, criminal mischief and theft by unlawful taking of an automobile.
