LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Homicides and non-fatal shootings are down in Louisville so far this year, but police said another crime is on the rise.
During a bi-weekly update Wednesday, Louisville Metro Police Department reported a 30% drop in homicides and a 40% decrease in non-fatal shootings compared to this time last year. Robberies and traffic fatalities have also declined.
However, authorities said road rage incidents and hit-and-run crashes are trending upward. One recent case turned violent near the intersection of Taylor Boulevard and Beecher Street, when a driver allegedly brake-checked another, leading to a confrontation that ended in a shooting. Three children were in the car at the time, police said.
“It is not a personal offense if somebody cuts you off,” LMPD chief Paul Humphrey said. “They don’t know you, they don’t care about you. There is no reason for a minor traffic dispute to turn into a life-or-death situation.”
With warmer weather approaching, LMPD said it will increase patrols as part of its Group Violence Intervention strategy, focusing on getting violent offenders off the streets.
Police urge drivers to stay calm on the roads and avoid engaging in confrontations.
