LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville family says it is one step closer to justice after a man was charged with murder Friday in connection with a 2024 homicide in the Newburg neighborhood.
According to Louisville Metro Police, 33-year-old Jarvis Garrett was charged with murder and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
Garrett is accused of killing Takieo Thomas. Police said Thomas was found dead in Petersburg Park on May 16, 2024.
According to Thomas' sister, Danielle Phillips, the shooter walked up behind her brother and shot him in the back of the head while he was sitting on a bench in the park.
"He was found sitting on the bench in Petersburg Park with his head down like maybe he was laying head down ... like he was taking a nap," she said.
Phillips said she plans to be at all of Garrett's court hearings.
"I want to know the reason why you pulled that trigger in the back of my brother's head and shot him," Phillips said.
Police said Garrett was already being held at the Fayette County Detention Center on unrelated charges when he was served with the murder charge.

"To be already arrested and still committing crimes after you killed my brother, it's like you have zero remorse for life," Phillips said.
Phillips said she feels relieved there is a chance for justice, but the pain of losing her brother remains.
"It hurts that I can't call my brother. I can't hear his voice. I can't see a social media post," Phillips said. "I can't see a text message. I can't see nothing but memories that I have. That's it."
She has already lost someone she can't get back.
"You went on about your life and my brother can't," Phillips said.
Garrett is being held on a $100,000 bond. His arraignment is scheduled for July 24 in Jefferson County.
