LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- At least two people were arrested over the last month, accused of causing thousands of dollars of damage at Louisville parks.

Mayor Craig Greenberg praised the work of the city's Park Ranger Program, as well as the Louisville Metro Police Department, when announcing progress on reducing vandalism and theft at local parks Tuesday.

A juvenile was cited for criminal mischief for allegedly doing burnouts in an open field at Eva Bandman Park, causing $3,000 worth of damage on Oct. 28.

An adult was arrested after more burnout marks were found at Fern Creek Park, as well as other damage, from Nov. 2-3, totaling $5,000.

Another arrest was made after a security camera was stolen from Wyandotte Park on Nov. 6, causing $3,000 in damage.

"These cases show the clear value of our Park Ranger Program and its commitment to protecting the public spaces we all cherish," Greenberg said in a news release. "Our parks are meant to bring people together, and we will not tolerate the kind of reckless behavior that damages them."

City leaders said investments in security cameras and lighting are helping to crack down on vandalism at local parks.

"The city's recent investment in more cameras and lighting in our parks has had a significant impact by reducing incidents of vandalism and increasing accountability," Michelle King, executive director of Louisville Parks and Recreation, said in a news release.

Those who see suspicious activity at a park and it isn't emergency can call 311 to report it.

To report criminal activity, call LMPD's anonymous Crime Tip Line at (502) 574-LMPD (5673). Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the department's online Crime Tip Portal by clicking here.
