LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- According to data from Louisville Metro Police, more kids have become victims of violent crime this year compared to this time last year.
Tuesday, department leaders said they're continuing to work to keep more children safe.
"Group violence intervention is one thing that we've used to try to combat youth violence," Deputy Chief Emily McKinley said. "Getting in front of the youth that are most at risk, getting in front of their parents or guardians, offering resources and a way out of that path, so who are the kids that are most likely to be shooters because of the people that they're surrounding themselves with and making sure that they're aware of that risk."
LMPD's data shows a little more than 14% of victims of fatal and non-fatal shootings this year are between the ages of 11 and 17.
Last year, the number was about 13% but LMPD said the number of juvenile suspects is down this year.
