Oldham County High School principal will take week off after DUI charge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The principal of Oldham County High School was arrested for drunk driving over the weekend.

According to an arrest report, 40-year-old Angela Newcomb was arrested by the La Grange Police Department just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday after an officer stopped her as she was traveling northbound on South First Avenue in the southbound fast lane.

Police say Newcomb had slurred speech, was unsteady on her feet and needed assistance exiting her vehicle. An officer also stated that Newcomb's car smelled like alcohol.

She told officers at the scene she had been out with friends, and thought it was around 1:30 a.m.

Newcomb was arrested and booked into the Oldham County Jail around 3 a.m.

She later registered a .129 blood alcohol content, according to police.

Late Sunday night, Lori McDowell, director of communications for Oldham County Schools, issued the following statement on the arrest:

"District administrators are aware of the charges against Dr. Newcomb," McDowell said in the statement. "At this point, we have very limited information, except that the incident did not happen during school hours or on school property. Superintendent Schultz will be meeting with Dr. Newcomb Monday to determine next steps."

Newcomb is facing charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and reckless driving.

Newcomb was on administrative leave Monday, but after meeting with Superintendent Greg Schultz, the district said Newcomb will take the rest of the week off "to address personal matters." She's expected back at work Monday, Sept. 24.
