The York statue, created by sculptor Ed Hamilton, was erected and dedicated in the fall of 2003. York was an African American man who accompanied explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their 1803 expedition of the west.Â
It's an eight-foot sculpture that was commissioned by the city of Louisville to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Lewis and Clark's historical trip. York was born a slave and was a childhood companion of Clark. He played a significant role in the expedition.Â
