LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A $50 million dollar "shot of hope" is just a couple months from opening in west Louisville.
The Goodwill Opportunity Center in the Parkland neighborhood is in the final stages of construction.
On Wednesday, WDRB News was among the media outlets able to get an inside look at the 125,000 square-foot facility at the corner of 28th and Broadway.
DeVone Holt, the chief external affairs officer for Goodwill Industries of Kentucky, led the tour of the site that just two years ago, was the site of a long-decaying manufacturing plant.
"This is the dawning of a new day," Holt said. "This project for me is so much more than just a building."
Holt lives in west Louisville, and drives past the corner regularly. Once finished, Goodwill's Kentucky headquarters will be housed here, along with life-changing resources for thousands of neighbors.
"The end game is for men and women to come into this center, walk out with good quality jobs that allow them to live self-sufficient lifestyles," Holt said.
There will be a variety of partners at the facility, including KentuckianaWorks, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana, YMCA, Volunteers of America, and Legal Aid Society.
The Park Community Credit Union will help people who may not have a bank account. The Kentucky College of Barbering will be on-site, and the U of L College of Dentistry will provide services.
There will be community rooms, computer labs, job training, and career coaching.
"We meet wonderful people who only need an opportunity," Amy Luttrell, the CEO of Goodwill Industries of Kentucky, said. "Who need a hand up, and (then) just watch them go."
The facility will include a cafeteria and free childcare, which officials say can be a barrier for some parents in finding work.
"So the men and women who show up here will have free drop-in childcare services anytime they show up on this campus to utilize space, participate in programs," Holt said.
The center located in Parkland is expected to open doors to the public by mid-February.
"It is a revitalization of sorts for a community that is in desperate need of a shot of hope," Holt said.
