LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There's a club for nearly any interest: wine clubs, book clubs, car clubs, but one Louisville bunch bonds over beards.
The Derby City Whisker Club meets once a month to share their love of all things facial hair.
"It's sort of like a spectacle. Maybe back to the day of the freak show days," said member Josh Druin.
Nearly 50 members make up the club for bearded men and those who love them. Yes, even women and the follicley-challenged can join.Â
"You don't want to shame people for not having facial hair," said club president, Ryan Gore.
But for those mustachioed men macho enough to grow out their whiskers, there are the battles of the beards. Members compete all over the country in dozens of categories. From short beards to long beards, super styled or au naturale.
"I was the two-time World Champion in 2013 and 2015," said Patrick Fette, one of the most decorated beardsmen in the Derby City.
"I'm actually most known for my English-style mustache, which is no goatee, straight mustache styled out," said Fette.
After winning top prize twice, he's now competing in the musketeer category. The new do takes an hour to style, which is time well spent. He won a national title last month in Nashville.
"Unfortunately, I can't grow anything here so this is it for me. It's mustache or mustache goatee combo," said Fette.
Now he's gearing up to compete here at home. The Derby City Whisker Club will host "WhiskerMania 2," the second year Louisville's bearded brotherhood has played host to the competition as interest grows.
"We brought in almost 400 people and that includes from around the country and three people from England," said Gore.
Anyone from bearded beginners to muttonchop masters are invited to attend. WhiskerMania 2 takes place Saturday, October 8Â and proceeds go to Active Heroes.Â
