LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Several lane closures and restrictions are coming to the Sherman Minton Bridge over the next few weeks for road work.
Starting at 6 p.m. next Friday, July 12, officials with the Sherman Minton Renewal Project said there will be double lane restrictions on Interstate 64 West on the top deck of the bridge from Louisville to southern Indiana.Â
Those lane restrictions will end around 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 13.Â
The restrictions will return to I-64 West on the bridge starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 26, until 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 27.Â
One westbound lane will stay open both weekends. Officials said during the lane restrictions, the Interstate 264 westbound ramp to I-64 westbound will be closed.
Directional closures scheduled for Mid-July, early August
A directional closure is scheduled to begin in two weeks. All lanes of I-64 West, the top deck of the bridge, will close around 10 p.m. on Friday, July 19, and remain closed until 6 a.m. on Monday, July 22.Â
The eastbound lanes will stay open. Officials said the closure will allow crews to work safely on more hanger cable work and other "miscellaneous items."
A nine-day directional closure is scheduled to start the first week of August. Transportation officials said starting Friday, Aug. 2, I-64 West will close around 10 p.m. and remain closed until 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11.
Eastbound lanes will stay open during the nine-day closure, but the I-64 West exit ramp to Spring Street in downtown New Albany will close, as well as the I-264 West to I-64 West ramp.
Drivers are encouraged to take the suggested alternate route — Interstate 65 and Interstate 265.Â
Through traffic that bypasses I-65 will not be able to cross the bridge, and will be required to exit to I-264 and then Bank Street, officials said.Â
The ongoing construction is part of the Sherman Minton Renewal Project, which involves painting and rehabilitating the 61-year-old bridge. The project is anticipated to give the six-lane, double-decked span up to 30 more years of life.
The project is currently in it's fifth and final phase, which started in May and is "expected to last through late summer." It consists of replacing vertical hanger cables, replacing lighting, equipment installation, painting and adding permanent striping.
