LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Scoliosis affects about seven million people in the United States annually.

In most cases, doctors said it's unknown what causes the disease, so early detection is important for successful treatment.

Scoliosis typically develops in children between 10 to 15 years old. Girls are eight times more likely to need treatment.

Norton Children's Orthopedists say smaller curves may simply require observation or special physical therapy. But more severe curves can require a back brace or surgery.

The sooner scoliosis is diagnosed, the less likely severe treatment will be required.

"Early on it doesn't affect them much at all but the risk is later on an even into adulthood, if the curvatures get large enough it can affect their breathing, it can certainly affect back pain, the cosmetic issues with deformity and rotation of the ribs," said Dr. Joshua Meier, an orthopedic surgeon.

Annual physicals are important to look for rotation. People who have a family history of scoliosis are advised to keep a closer eye because genetics can be a factor.
