LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Elizabethtown Community & Technical College received a significant donation Thursday that will help build a facility for student parents.
Family Scholar House is partnering with the school on the project. The BlueOval SK plant in Glendale has pledged $100,000 a year over the next five years to help build a Family Scholar House facility on the northwest corner of campus. Right now, family services for student parents at ECTC are administered from a single office.
That will change once the new facility is built.
When complete, the $14.8 million project will feature 48 housing units, including the BlueOval SK Family Services Building, where student parents and their families receive personal and professional support.
The goal is to provide wraparound services to help local families achieve academic, personal and professional success. Students will have access to child care, food and other supportive services and resources, including financial literacy workshops and children’s activities.
Of note, program participants must be enrolled full-time in college and in a variety of trainings, counseling sessions and tutoring services to maintain eligibility.
Family Scholar House leaders, along with the lieutenant governor, were on hand for the check presentation Thursday morning.
Tara Jones, a recent graduate of ECTC, said Family Scholar House helped her get through school while raising her young child.
"I went in there, and I was blown away," Jones said. "They were so welcoming and understanding, and I didn't expect it. Then they walked into their pantry, which was like going to the grocery store."
Funds are still being raised for the project, with ECTC leaders saying they need to raise another $250,000 to complete the project.
They’re hoping to break ground on the project this Spring or Summer. Construction is expected to be complete by the Fall 2025 semester. CLICK HERE to learn more.
