MT. WASHINGTON, Ky. (WDRB) — Two school buildings are now one at Bullitt East High School following a $60 million expansion project designed to create more space for students and staff.
The project connected the existing high school building with the former Old Mill Elementary building, which sat vacant on the same campus after Old Mill students relocated to a new facility on Golden Wing Road in 2023.
The result is a larger high school campus with new amenities and room for the school's growing population.
"This end of the county is where the majority of our residential growth has been, and has continued to be projected over the course of the next several years," Superintendent Dr. Jesse Bacon said. "We want to be prepared for that."
Around 1,600 students have made up the enrollment at Bullitt East High School for the past several years. The original building was designed for only about 900 students.
Dr. Bacon said this expansion is designed for closer to 2,000 students.
"This year, for the first time, every teacher will have their own classroom," he said. "There'll be more spaces for students to interact, and it couldn't have turned out any better."
The expansion features a new main entrance, larger cafeteria, administrative offices, additional classrooms and workspaces and a 500-seat auditorium.
District leaders welcomed students into the expanded space recently during an open house.
"Anybody that has come to see what we've been able to open up and provide them, they've just been overly excited about the opportunities that are in front of them, and so for us, it's worth it," Dr. Bacon said.
The expansion at Bullitt East follows district wide projects that have already finished and others that remain in progress.
Within the last few years, Bullitt East, North Bullitt and Bullitt Central were all on the receiving end of new football fields, press boxes, video boards, double additional bleacher seating and expanded tracks.Â
Recently, construction finished on a new physical science center at North Bullitt. The facility features a turf field, weight rooms and locker rooms. Similar facilities are currently under construction at Bullitt East and Bullitt Central.
They are expected to be finished in November.
"November and December will allow us to just kind of take a breath, take a step back, look at where we are from an entire district perspective, and then decide where our next project is going to be," Bacon said.
The first day for students in Bullitt County is Wednesday.
