LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A school bus on its side. Bloody victims. Screams of agony. All of this, days before Oldham County Schools' bus drivers hit the streets -- but it's just a drill.
An intensive training exercise Tuesday morning simulated significant injuries in a rollover bus accident with students on board, caused by a distracted bus driver.
The scene at the Oldham County Schools Transportation Compound on Colonel Drive was focused on a bus that had been placed on its side. Makeup and fake blood were used to show the injuries, and first responders were in full gear.
Oldham County Schools transportation trainer David Peters said their staff has to be prepared, and that's why the district held the realistic drill that included actors.
Equipment was also brought in to simulate extrication procedures by first responders. A helicopter was brought in to demonstrate medical evacuation.
"This just shows that it doesn't matter how good you are, how long you've been here," Peters said. "Accidents and emergencies can happen."
All Oldham County Schools transportation staff either participated or observed the training including drivers, monitors, mechanics and office personnel.
Multiple agencies participated in the drill, including the La Grange Fire Department, Ballardsville Fire Department, Oldham County EMS, OCS School Resource officers and Stat Flight helicopter service.
