LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools will soon welcome a new Superintendent Brian Yearwood, who signed a multi-year deal with a six-figure salary to match.

Yearwood, who takes over July 1, will earn $350,000 a year. But he's not alone in the high-earning ranks of Kentucky's largest school district.

A new searchable database created by WDRB News reveals the salaries of more than 18,000 JCPS employees, ranging from teachers and principals to custodians and coaches. The data was obtained through an Open Records request and is public under Kentucky law.

Of those listed, 115 employees make more than $150,000 a year.

The highest-paid employee is current Superintendent Marty Pollio, who earns more than $351,000 annually. Pollio is set to retire at the end of June and will become the next president of Ivy Tech Community College.

Six other JCPS administrators, including Chief Equity Officer John Marshall and Chief Operations Officer Robert Fulk, each make just under $200,000 a year. The district's spokesperson, Carolyn Callahan, is also among the top earners, with a salary exceeding $199,000 — the 10th-highest in the district.

For years, critics have raised concerns about high administrative salaries at JCPS. The new database allows users to search by name, school, or job title to see how much any JCPS employee earns.

"Like most public entities, JCPS has salary schedules that include factors like experience, qualifications, and job requirements," Callahan said in a written statement Tuesday. "... JCPS is Louisville’s second largest employer with a $2 billion budget, 18,000 employees and 96,000 students. Managing Louisville’s second largest employer requires dedicated, skilled employees who are paid competitive salaries that are still less than similar-sized corporations. Also, on a per pupil basis, JCPS has lower district administration costs than all other Kentucky school districts.

"... Pay raises are based on the board-approved, negotiated contract with the Jefferson County Teachers Association. Virtually all other JCPS employees historically receive the same raise as those in JCTA’s contracts. The Jefferson County Board of Education makes all final decisions on raises."
