LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) elementary school has received a prestigious honor.

Frayser Elementary School has been designated a Leader in Me Lighthouse School" by FranklinCovey Education. Leader in Me is an evidence-based PK-12 model, developed in partnership with educators, designed to build resilience and leadership in students, create a high-trust culture, and help improve academic achievement.

The designation is given to schools seeing positive outcomes in teaching leadership principles, creating a leadership culture among students and aligning academic systems.

JCPS superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said he isn't surprised by the award.

"It's always been a special place here," Pollio said. "It is, you know, such a diverse school. Every time I come here the faculty and staff are amazing, they are working many times in challenging situations. But the principal is amazing, the teachers are amazing, and that usually translates into the kids doing amazing things."

Frayser has also seen skyrocketing test scores, an increase in teacher satisfaction and a decrease in student suspensions.
