LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville is getting a new preschool named in honor of longtime educator and former Board of Education member Diane L. Porter.
The Jefferson County Board of Education approved the name — Diane L. Porter Preschool — during its meeting Tuesday.
Porter was appointed the JCPS Board of Education in 2010 and served until her resignation in 2023. She became the first African American woman to serve as board chair two years after her original appointment.
During her tenure, Porter focused on expanding early childhood education and advancing equity across the district. She played a role in the development of schools like the Grace M. James Academy of excellence, which serves girls of color.
She spent 39 years in the district as a teacher, counselor, principal and administrator.Â
Diane L. Porter Preschool is set to open for the 2026-27 school year.
