LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- In one week, over 96,000 Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) students will head back to school.

Next Thursday, students return to Price Elementary and schools across Jefferson County. So this week, most teachers are already in the classrooms getting a head start.

The first day of school for JCPS teachers is next Monday but most teachers started this week.

"We have been having a variety of different trainings that we could participate in," 3rd grade teacher Jordan Hunter said. "And so I've been to all of those and alongside of trying to get this classroom together."

This is Hunter's second year in the classroom. This week, she is using the time to get her classroom ready for students but that doesn't mean they'll hit the books on day one.

"So really just trying to first get to know your students, instead of jumping right into curriculum," Hunter said.

"The work and preparation and planning," principal Shavon Ray said. "It’s going to make a difference next week when our kids come into the building."

Depending on the grade, the ABCs, reading, Spanish and English will all be part of the curriculum but Ray said the first extra credit assignment is for teachers.

"To have smiling faces, make sure students are welcome," Ray said. "Feel welcome when they walk in the door and know that we're going to take care of them while they're in the building and that our most important focus is that they get to and from home safely."

"For parents, just making sure that you are being responsive," Hunter said.

Meanwhile, Hunter said they've got the classroom covered but shares what parents can do to help.

"Being there for your student making sure that you are staying in the loop with what's going on at school and making sure that you implement what's happening at school into their home lives and vice versa," Hunter said.
