LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools officials said all options are on the table as the district works to deal with a $188 million budget shortfall, but they gave conflicting statement about possible cutbacks.

During a revenue task force meeting Monday evening, school board member James Craig said layoffs are likely. WDRB followed up Tuesday with Superintendent Brian Yearwood, who said they weren't an option. But less than an hour later, we got a different answer when we asked a follow-up question.

"We are not talking about layoffs. We are not laying anyone off," Yearwood said. "But we are looking at certain reductions, such as freezing our hiring, things like that."

About 45 minutes after Yearwood said that, WDRB received a correction from a JCPS spokesperson asking to use this quote instead: "Our first step in staffing adjustments will be to reorganize to make sure we are working efficiently. While we do not have a finalized plan or budget to share at this time, layoffs are not off the table."

A district spokesperson said Yearwood misspoke and it's unlikely that it can reach a $132 million budget reduction target without at least discussing potential layoffs.
