KBE COMMISSIONER FINALISTS

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Board of Education named three finalists for the position of commissioner of education.

According to a news release, the board's interview committee voted to recommend Buddy Berry, Robbie Fletcher and Jim Flynn as finalists on March 8. The finalists will be interviewed in Louisville on March 18-19.

The position has been vacant since Dr. Jason Glass' resignation last fall. Glass said he left, in part, because of controversial laws passed during the last legislative session. He's now an associate vice president at Western Michigan University.

Robin Fields Kinney is serving as the interim state commissioner of education. Kinney and the board agreed that she would not be considered a candidate for the permanent position.

Berry has been the superintendent of Eminence Independent Schools since 2010. The Eminence native began his teaching career as a high school math teacher in Owen County and Jefferson County.

Fletcher is serving as the superintendent of Lawrence County Schools. He has held that position since 2014. Fletcher was previously a part-time faculty member at Asbury University and principal, assistant principal and math teacher in Martin County.

Flynn serves as the executive director of Kentucky Association of School Superintendents, which he has held since 2019. He previously served as superintendent of Simpson County Schools from 2003 to 2019.

The board plans to submit a new commissioner to the Kentucky Senate for consideration of confirmation by the end of March.
