LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Louisville Metro Police Department opened a new substation Monday on the Simmons College of Kentucky campus.

It's part of a partnership to provide 24-hour police visibility on campus.

Simmons said the substation, located in a dorm building, will allow for quick responses to any concerns and create a safer environment for everyone.

College leaders said it also creates the opportunity to form connections with police officers.

"It's important because a lot of people don't have the opportunity to speak to officers one-on-one," LMPD Maj. Tiffany Tatum said.

The school believes the partnership will make a big difference for students and the community as a whole.

"To be able to interact with our students, interact with other folks who are in the community, I think it's a good thing for them to be here when there's not an urgent thing going on, just day-to-day interaction," Dr. Rick Smith Sr., with Simmons College, said.

Simmons College of Kentucky is the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Louisville.
