LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Kentucky judge permanently shut down a Louisville-based moving company after an investigation found the company stealing from its customers.

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced Thursday that a Franklin County Circuit Court judge ruled to permanently ban Margaret's Movers and its owner, Margaret Weathers, from providing moving services in the state.

In addition, the business has to pay more than $234,000 in civil penalties and restitution.

"Predatory businesses, like Margaret’s Movers, are on notice: take advantage of the trust of your customers, and we will shut you down,"  Coleman said in the release.

Last August, Coleman's office began investigating the Louisville business after receiving numerous consumer complaints, including the company failing to return items to the customer after storage, failing to disclose where items were being stored, and damaged or stolen items during moving and storage and failing to compensate for them.

The investigation also uncovered, with the help of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Margaret's Movers was providing moving services in the state illegally for almost 10 years.
