LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Students and families gathered at Butler High School on Monday morning to honor veterans and their sacrifices in its first live ceremony since 2019.

Led by the school's JROTC cadets, the ceremony included moments to pay tribute and recognize veterans for their service. A Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipient also addressed the audience, sharing personal insights with those in attendance.

Students who helped organize the event highlighted the importance of honoring those who risked their lives for the country.

"They did everything in their power for us to be able to sit here safely (and) go to school," said Didie Drogba, Butler's senior class president. "I think it's very important for us to remember what they did."

During the ceremony, the Kentucky Department of the Order of the Purple Heart also recognized Butler High School as a Purple Heart High School, a prestigious and rare honor. In fact, Butler is the first Purple Heart High School in the U.S.

This special designation reflects Butler's dedication to educating students about the importance of service and sacrifice in military service.
