LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) middle school students got an early start on their leadership skills.

On Wednesday, more than 200 JCPS middle schoolers attended the "Explore Ambassador Leadership Conference."

Collectively, they represent at least 12 schools across the district.

When people visit a school, they are more than likely to run into an Explore Ambassador.

At the conference, students participated in confidence, leadership, public speaking and team building sessions.

"So we want them to be able to take things from today to be able to use them in their everday life," Alex Claycomb, explore coach at Ramsey Middle School, said. "We also want them to be able to sharpen those skills and be able to use them when we need them to talk to parents, district leaders, anyone who comes in the building so that they can share that Explore Experience in the best way possible."

Students had to apply for the honor. It includes a recommendation from a teacher and an essay.
