LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Simmons College of Kentucky and Equus Flight Academy partnered for a Bessie Coleman Day Celebration.

Coleman was the first African American and Native American female pilot. She earned her license in 1921.

To honor Coleman, students from several Louisville public schools and Simmons attended an interactive aviation career fair Monday.

Part of the partnership is a proposed bachelor of science in aviation management. The program would offer hands-on training experiences with courses in ground school, flight labs, aviation safety, law and marketing.

"The main thing I think is important today to get across to these young minds in here today is the amount of opportunities to find something they're passionate about," said Kacy Thompson-Smith, a Louisville Aviation flight instructor. "There's a wide variety of things to do in aviation, whether it's a pilot, mechanic, lawyer, doctor, there's many pathways to go through."

The goal of the program is to encourage more people of color to entre careers in aviation.
